  
THE HUMAN GNOMON PROJECT: A HUMAN SUNDIAL
In ancient times, ancestors used stationary points on the ground (the gnomon) to reflect sunlight and cast a shadow. Markings on the ground helped determine the time of year, and the time of day. Until the invention of mechanical clocks, sundials were the best way of telling time. Although many have been replaced by mechanical timepieces, sundials remain in use as functional decorations to homes, gardens, playgrounds, and parks.
What Is the Human Gnomon Project?
The Human Gnomon Project provides a way for communities to create their own Analametic Sundial, which uses a human body as the gnomon. Depending on the month of the year, a person will stand on a predetermined area (representing months) and the sun will cast their shadow onto one of 14 numbers (6 and 7 are duplicated in the morning and evening). The Human Gnomon shadow will point accurately to the time of day.
Purpose of the Project
The Human Gnomon Project provides science and math principals that challenge children’s understanding of the solar system, concepts of time telling, and appreciation of the sun’s effect on seasons. Not only is a beautiful resource created for the community to use and admire, but the process itself brings people together with a united goal.
Who Makes the Human Sundial?
People of all ages can participate in creating the Sundial. Depending on the method you select to make the stationary portions of the project (see packages below), a variety of skill levels can be used to achieve success. Kids, with adult supervision, will enjoy the project. A civic group can unite for the day and complete a Human Gnomon Sundial and PTOs can create an educational, artistic project at their school. Participation is up to you.
The Packages:
Learning Structure’s creative team customizes each order depending on your geographic location. When you order your Human Gnomon Project kit, you will receive custom-designed measurements and coordinates to successfully create the human sundial. Learning Structures designs the precise details for each site and unique templates are created for every client. Using the details and templates, kids and volunteers paint images on asphalt, create concrete mosaic images for their sundial, or recycled rubber mats and numbers can be installed anywhere on a playground, quiet garden area, or a public park.

The Paint on Asphalt kit lends freedom for creativity. The numbers and month block can be painted using special themes from your community. Learning Structures will provide guidelines for the type of paint and brushes that can create a beautiful design. Whether your design is created by an artist donating their time, or the children of your community, the Paint on Asphalt kit will produce a beautiful Human sundial.

KIT 2: MOSAIC
The Mosaic Human Gnomon kit works well in a quiet park or sitting area. Mosaic tiles create a beautiful permanent piece that will last for generations. This process involves a concrete form which pieces of glass, tile, and stone are pressed into. Learning Structures will provide instructions and helpful tips on creating your mosaic human sundial. The final product is truly a work of art.

KIT 3: RECYCLED RUBBER SUNDIAL
The custom-made Recycled Rubber Sundial is perfect for installation on a playground. The rubber pieces are safe for children of all ages and can be placed around play structures according to playground safety guidelines. The rubber mats are custom-made for each client. Mats are fixed to the ground using concrete anchors. Learning Structures will produce the mats and provide you with the exact coordinates for placement.
